IOM’s Emergency Response Induction Training

IOM through its Emergency Response Induction Trainings (ERIT) strategy has been building capacity of its staff in areas such as first responder training, resource allocation, finance mechanisms, relief goods and services, migration crisis, humanitarian system, WASH, protection of sexual exploitation and abuse, gender-based violence, reporting in emergencies, etc. to strengthen the skills of the responders and improve their preparedness.

Face-to-face training methodology was used earlier to perform ERIT once a year. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic’s present mobility limits, it’s became necessary to seek virtual training options and to accomplish it there was a need to digitize the pre-existing ERIT training package.

Empower School of Health supported IOM in transforming the existing ERIT face to face training materials and supporting resources into virtual instructor led training modules along with interactive exercises as well as developed a virtual simulation through a platform.

There are 20 modules along with facilitator guide and participant guides where the focus would be to immerse the learner into a virtual environment with peers and facilitators where ideas can be freely shared. To make it more interactive, ice breakers, group exercises and simulation-based exercises have also been created.

An interactive self-paced remote simulation of 3.5 hours has also been developed to ensure the learnings of the presentations can be assessed and applied by the participants.

A pdf document with best tips and practices has been created to ensure effective delivery of online training sessions. This document will provide some suggestions and ideas to help manage Instructor led training to a virtual mode with the right approach.
